Baltimore Winter Landscaping 102

green hellebore, winter landscaping

Perennials like ornamental grasses, hellebores, and dianthus keep their green foliage throughout the year, making them a great to your winter landscaping.

Still looking for ways to spruce up your yard this winter? Here are another three winter landscaping tips to help add texture, color, and beauty to your yard this season!

Go Hard on Your Hardscape

Winter lets you really analyze your yard without the distraction of green foliage and bright flowers. Take a look around and see where your yard is missing some eye-catching. Some great non-plant options for focal points in your yard include trellises, benches, arbors, and even garden sculptures. Popular options for garden sculpture include stone and metalwork – if you’re not sure what might be best for your landscaping style, ask a professional!

Winter Container Gardening

Some gardens aren’t just based in the ground – sometimes, landscaping may include window boxes and hanging baskets. Just because you don’t have any flowers to fill them with, doesn’t mean you have to put them away for the season! Swap out your flowers for hardy winter plants like miniature dwarf Alberta spruce or broadleaf evergreens such as Japanese Andromeda, holly and rhododendron. These plants will need to be watered during the dried parts of the winter, but are sturdy, cold-resistant plants perfect for container gardening.

Or don’t spend money on plants at all! Trying filling your containers with evergreen boughs of different textures and colors, and adding visually interesting twigs or branches. Turn your containers into a collage of preserved materials using just what you find in your backyard!

Look For Plants That Stick Around

Evergreens are the only plants that stay vibrant and colorful during all four seasons! Perennials like ornamental grasses, hellebores, and dianthus keep their green foliage throughout the year, making them a great to your winter landscaping. Make sure to double check the tags before buying at your local nursery, as some plants need more sun or more water at certain times of the year. Or ask a local professional to help you pick out the perfect plants for your landscaping style.
