What to Do When Your Snow Blower Won’t Start

With winter assuredly here, and snowfall looking on the horizon, many Marylanders have probably been meaning to take a look at their snow blower for quite some time. While a professional snow removal service will take care of snow for you, if you’d rather do it yourself and have run into a finicky snow blower that just won’t start, Lehnhoff’s Landscaping is here with a few tips on troubleshooting the situation.

Check the Fuel Tank

A snow blower without any gas isn’t going anywhere. Examine your fuel and oil levels to make sure you’ve got plenty to get going. If you didn’t add any fuel stabilizer before you stored your snow blower, the fuel may have lost its combustibility. Drain the tank through the carburetor and pour in some fresh gas.

Examine the Fuel Shutoff Valve

IF you haven’t taken a look at your snow blower for a while, chances are you may have forgotten about the fuel shutoff valve, Locate it, using a manual if necessary and flip it from OFF to ON.

Know Those Switches

There’s still a few more switches to look out for. Certain snow blower models have key-operated safety switches, similar to those on lawnmowers, AND red toggle switches. If you’re running into trouble starting your snow blower make sure you’ve inserted your key and that your toggle switch is in the run position. If you fail to do this not only will your snow blower not start, you could accidentally flood the engine.

Choking Under Pressure

To start a snow blower under any conditions the choke (the throttle) should be at least at ¾ speed. In cold weather there’s nothing wrong with going in for a little extra choke if the situation calls for it. If your snow blower’s engine is too cold, it may be worth turning the choke up to the max. In very cold weather you may even want to avoid priming the engine altogether, as this could flood the engine.
