The Importance of Outdoor Lighting in Winter

Outdoor Lighting plays an important role in your landscape year round. But outdoor lighting is arguably at its most important during the winter, and not just because of the Christmas season. Because of the sun setting early and long dark nights outdoor lighting improves the safety and security of your home during the winter. Outdoor lighting can also be used to significantly boost your home’s night time curb appeal in contrast with the barren day time landscape.

Safety and Security

Outdoor lighting can dramatically improve the safety of your home during the winter. They do this by helping to protect you against the greatest hazard to your health in the winter, slipping and falling. For example spotlights with motion sensors can not only help deter criminals and pests, but provide you with much needed light when you’re unloading the car on a winter night. In the dark a thin coating of ice called black ice, or clear ice, is virtually unnoticeable. But, with a spotlight, or path lighting, you can see whether your way is clear or filled with treacherous black ice.  Path lighting and spot lighting also provide a year round improvement to safety by revealing potential tripping hazards you might otherwise trip on in the night.

Boost Winter Curb Appeal

The winter is a barren time for landscaping. With short day light hours and cold weather many plants are dormant, and lifeless in appearance.  However, at night your winter landscape can come alive with magic and whimsy if you use the right outdoor lighting arrangements. With the proper use of out door lighting the path to your front door can be lit as if by as will-o’-wisps. Stars can twinkle in your trees and shrubs using string lights. Any landscaping or hardscaping features can be highlighted with accent lighting to make them pop out on a dark winter night. Accent lighting can also reveal the natural crystalline beauty of icicles dangling from your roof (but be careful to clear any icicles from above where you walk) or add a warm glow to the snow.  These are just a few examples of how, with the right lighting arrangements, you can turn your home into a winter wonderland with outdoor lighting.
