Lehnhoff’s Landscaping: Loving the Succulent Trend

In the last couple years, succulents have stuck their roots deep in the soil of home and garden trends. These resilient little plants have grown into a huge design craze, appearing everywhere from Martha Stewart in modular planters to the New York Times in glass terrariums.

Even though succulents – which are plants with thick, fleshy, water-storing leaves or stems – make for terrific house plants, they also look great out of doors. Besides being low-water plants and virtually indestructible, succulents are a great complement to hardscaped spaces, and their limited growth means that they are ideal for small spaces or areas that you don’t want to have to prune and maintain frequently.

Below, see some of Lehnhoff’s Landscaping’s suggestions for incorporating this enduring trend into your yard, and keep your outdoor space looking as in style and up-to-date as you are.

Succulent Steps: If you have stone steps in your garden, consider planting succulents along and within them, adding color and texture to your hardscaped walkways. Many succulents can withstand heavy traffic, meaning that your steps won’t lose their functionality, and you don’t have to worry about tiptoeing around your own backyard.

Containing Nature: As aforementioned, succulents can withstand the indoors, but in reality, they do better outside where they can soak up the sun and benefit from proper air circulation. Consider transferring the pots and containers you have inside your home filled with succulents to the outdoors. Or, create new container gardens to liven up tabletops, bare corners, empty patio spaces, and sparse porches.

Retaining Plants: If you have retaining walls in your garden, succulents look great planted within them, and are an optimal choice for raised spaces as they do well in elevated areas. Spruce up these hardscaped areas by incorporating the different color, shapes, and sizes that succulents have to offer.

When expanding your garden with this germinating trend, be sure to keep in mind that succulents need proper drainage and soil, or else their roots risk rotting.
