Creating A Successful Hardscape

Integrating hardscaped elements into your yard can expand the functionality of your outdoor space. Whether you want to create a stacked wall to generate supplementary planting areas or have a craving for a luxurious outdoor kitchen, patios, steps, walkways, and the like can enhance the usability and purpose of your yard.

Balancing Act

When adding plants and rock elements to your landscape, make sure they fit the scale of your space. Huge boulders plopped down in a small area will not look attractive – or natural. Make sure natural features like rocks are incorporated into your landscape – not just haphazardly placed in it.

Similarly, harsh lines can make the hardscaped areas of your yard look totally irrelevant to the green spots. Rectangular and L-shaped patios have their place, but oftentimes, designs that incorporate curves and shapes do a better job of transitioning patios and gardens – making your yard feel like it was always meant to look the way it will when your design is complete.

Design Challenge

When designing your hardscaped areas and landscape as a whole, develop a thematic idea and root your plans firmly in that. Do you desire an Italian courtyard with a water feature focal point or a scene from The Secret Garden? A Japanese rock garden or a formal French landscape complete with clipped hedges? Whatever the case, it’s important that the hardscaping materials you select fit not only with your motif, but also with the rest of your home’s interior and exterior. Variety in terms of color and texture will transform your patios and walkways from looking as bland as concrete sidewalks into a space with serious visual interest.

Go Green

Literally. Don’t neglect to offset hardscaped areas with plants and grasses. Doing so will prevent your yard from looking stark and unfinished. Let patios and walkways compliment gardens by serving as trails to your shrubs, flowers, and trees.
