Protecting Your Landscape During Winter

Winter Landscaping

Use these tips to protect your landscape this winter!

We’ve had a couple of snowstorms in the area recently, making this a great time to consider strategies to keep your landscape safe. Even when it’s not snowing, winter’s harsh temperatures can do a lot of damage to your landscape. When you factor in precipitation though, the problem gets a lot worse. Fortunately there are some steps you can take to make sure your landscape stays in good shape over the winter.

Look At Your Trees’ Limbs

The reasoning for this might not seem clear at first, but monitoring your trees’ limbs can go a long way towards preserving your landscape. As snow falls, it will gather on your trees’ limbs and weigh them down. This can lead to them breaking off, so make sure the limbs are adequately trimmed before too much snow falls. Also, it’s a good idea to check on your trees in general because they might be showing some signs of damage.

Make Sure Your Plants Are Hydrated

Many people stop focusing on watering their plants as it gets colder outside. Some may believe that the precipitation will account for the plants’ need for water. However, your plants will still need adequate hydration to make it through the winter. In fact, if your plants aren’t hydrated well enough, they will be more vulnerable to the winter weather. Remember that moisture is escaping some your plants through their leaves during this season, so remember to water them.

Protect Your Plants

There are some plants out there that will need to be physically protected from the elements. If you have a potted plant, bring it indoors when the temperatures get too low. If this isn’t possible, create a physical shield from the elements made of a material like burlap. Using the wrong material could harm the plant and make it less viable in the future.

Be Careful With Salt

After a snowstorm, it’s usually a good idea to put some salt down to deal with any remaining ice. While this is helpful, it’s important to make sure that you don’t use it too close to your plants. Salt can harm a plant’s roots, which will cause problems that you may not realize until it’s too late. Be mindful about where your plants are when you apply salt to your property.
