Let’s take a closer look at how to add fill dirt into your next landscaping project. Since your yard is often the focal point of your residential landscape, use fill dirt to help bolster your new design. After all, your yard probably needs some refreshing as spring rolls on into summer.

Some Tools You Will Need

The make the most of the fill dirt you had delivered, you will need a few tools. Here are some examples:

  • Wood stakes
  • Rake
  • Wheelbarrow
  • Fill dirt and topsoil
  • Shovel
  • Lawn roller

Incorporating Fill Dirt into Your Landscape

  1. Start by removing plants and grass. You might need to create a new lawn in the near future, but you can reuse the grass you just dug up. When you are setting aside the plants and grass, be sure to put them out of the way but in the order you first removed them.
  2. Next, put the wood stakes into the ground. These stakes will help you identify where slope lines lie. Slope lines can facilitate drainage from your yard. Make sure you run rows of the stakes from your house all the way to the edge of your property. For best results, the rows should be 4 feet apart, and the stakes should be set at intervals of 10 feet.
  3. Now that you have an area designated for the dirt, the next step is to actually add it to your yard. The wheelbarrow can help you move the dirt in separate loads to each section of your yard. Once you’ve done that, the shovel and the rake can help you spread out the loads.
  4. Lastly, it’s time to use the lawn roller. With the lawn roller, you can pack the dirt down. This step will ensure your lines of dirt are neat and orderly. Adding topsoil can raise the level of the dirt as needed. But if you add topsoil, be sure to run the lawn roller again if you need to smooth the surfaces out.
