Get the Gophers Out of Your Lawn

Spring is the time for rebirth. This is the time to bring your yard back up to working condition so that, when summer hits, you’ll be ready for all the fun outdoor activities you will want to have. So, to make sure that this goes as smoothly as possible, you should probably think about deterring gophers from tearing up the ground around your lovely home. A gopher infestation can ruin any lawn or garden you might want to enjoy, so let’s check out some tips on getting them out of the yard.

Deterring through clever planting.

Planting certain plants in your garden and yard can deter gophers before they settle in to ruin your grass. There is a particular plant called “Gopher Spurge” that is specifically grown to deter gophers. You can also choose from a wide variety of plants that gophers don’t seem to mess with for your garden. Lavender, Geraniums, Rosemary, Pomegranate, and many others seem to survive gopher infestations rather well. You can also use chicken wire cages around the bottoms of your younger plants to keep gophers from burrowing through their little roots.

After the infestation.

So, you’ve got gophers, huh? That doesn’t have to be the end of the world. You have some options to get rid of the destructive rodents without killing them. You can simply drive them off. Gophers are sensitive to any sounds that vibrate through their underground tunnel system. So, you can purchase a little device that will send sound down into the ground. The gophers should leave very soon. If they don’t, you can hire a professional to trap them for you. You can try trapping them yourself if you feel particularly outdoorsy, but they can be tricky to catch. If you plan to catch them you can place humane traps around the entrances to their tunnels. Make sure to rub the traps with rosemary or another strong smelling herb so that they won’t catch your scent.
